Hedges have been ripped out of the countryside all over the UK, and this has had a detrimental impact on birds, animals and insects, not to mention the flowers and weeds that also need hedges in order to survive.
Thankfully around Cheshire we seem to have kept lots of hedges and a walk down a typical hedge will show many different trees growing within the hedge system, most are good for hedge laying except when there is too much elder growing within it. Elder is best removed or treated to kill it off as it can ruin a good hedge.
Hawthorn lends itself best to hedge laying and if done properly makes a first class stock fence and also provides both home and byway to all kinds of creatures. A properly laid hedge needs very little maintenance and looks lots better than a wire fence that can often cost more than having the existing hedge laid.
We prefer to lay hedges in the midland method with hazel woven into the top, although maybe not as high as the true midland would be at four and a half feet, although this will be discussed when we give you a quote for the job.
Hedge laying is a job for the winter months and is best started around the beginning of October.
We can also plant hedges with a view to laying them once they are established, but this may take a few years and is not a good stock fence until it is matured.
If you have a hedge that needs laying or planting give us a call and see what we recommend for you.
